WHY LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT SHUT DOWN PHARMACEUTICALS – Prof. Akin Abayomi

Lagos State Taskforce on Counterfeit Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods today shut down more than 20 Pharmacies, Patent Medicine shops and unlicensed premises where offences bordering on illegal operations beyond the scope of practice are taking place.

The Lagos State Honourable Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, disclosed earlier today while reviewing the report of the enforcement exercise carried out by the Task Force.

The actions of the Lagos State Task Force were in line with the provisions of Section C34 of the Counterfeit, Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods Miscellaneous Provision Act of 1999 said the commissioner.

The commissioner revealed that the premises were sealed for operating without licence, engaging unqualified persons, dispense of drugs to suspects, operating beyond scope through sale of unethical products, storing drugs in unconducive environments, amongst others.

The commissioner’s statement was a vow to eliminate such unacceptable practices by the State Government through enforcement of the law and sanctioning of erring operators.

In great concern to the medical needs of Lagos State citizens, the commissioner maintained that the government will continue to insist on suitable environments best for the dispensation of medical care to promote and maintain good health.

Pharmacies misconduct causes dire effect

Acting Director, of Pharmaceutical Services, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Mrs. Mosunmola Olufumilola lay iterated voice for the campaign saying that the State Government will not relent in its efforts to curb the dangers associated with operations from unlicensed pharmaceutical outlets.

The acting director disclosed that the Task Force, through the Pharmaceutical Inspectorate Unit (PIU) of the Pharmaceutical Services Directorate, has been encouraged to intensify the ongoing war against fake, expired and substandard drugs being peddled by unlicensed and illegal premises which ends up claiming the lives of innocent Nigerians.
