Though the competition between the internal combustion engines and electric cars has been a long issue, with advantages and dis advantages of the two models of cars competing with each other.
In 1884, when the first electric car was developed by Thomas Parker using his high capacity rechargeable batteries, the car was highly appreciated by many and became reasons most car manufacturers then started trying the possibility of producing electric cars for commercial purpose. In the quest for electric car production, Andreas Flocken in 1888 invented another model of electric car which he named Flocken Elektrowagen a model which changed the initial designs in the electric car production. Record has it that within the 18th century electric car were relatively better than the cars using gasoline made with internal combustion engines. The reason of such higher advantage and preference among buyers were attributed the bulky nature of gasoline cars, their uncontrollable noise on the roads, their frequent breakdown due to mechanical failures, their problem of high starting, and the inaccessible nature of the gasoline within the society.
Due to all the above disadvantages of the gasoline cars, the electric cars were having higher demand such that in every 50 cars on the road, the electric cars would be more than 30 in number. However, in the early 19th century a quick swift from electric cars to gasoline cars took place following the modifications and improvements in the gasoline car, first was the change in the sound system, second reduced weight of engine which the material for production moved from steel to aluminum alloys, the rapid availability of crude oil across the globe which made gasoline readily available, the improved cooling system in internal combustion engines which helped to reduce excessive engine breakdown, the improvement in acid-lead battery which made it possible for the gasoline to start quickly and at will due to the alternator recharging the battery for engine ignition.
Record has it that, gasoline cars has their highest boom from 19’s which accelerated in demand and production until the 20th century when new sets of rechargeable batteries were developed using Nickel-Lithium or Platinum metals, which has higher capacity than the existing rechargeable batteries. The major reason which made electric cars to have another chance of competition with gasoline cars was the global need to save the ozone layer from the excess carbon monoxide emission which is majorly deposited by gasoline cars and industrial generators. This disadvantage of gasoline car has made world leaders to start coming together to device means of reducing carbon monoxide emission in the atmosphere, and one of the means adopted was Emission Control, (it is a method of specifying a specific fuel-air combustion ratio for internal engine manufacturers,) and promoting any alternative power system that will reduce emission of such gas to save the ozone layer.
Meanwhile, as the need to control excessive gas emission is getting strict, there has been a continuous increase in the price of crude oil across the globe which is directly affecting the economy of the potential buyers which has made some of them to start encouraging the production and using of electric cars in their country, in a way of reducing the quantity of crude oil importation to save their revenue for other infrastructure. For this reason, electric cars are increasing in number every year starting from 1990 when the California Air Resources Board developed their first electric car.
It is believed that from the year 2000 till date there has been a continuous increase in the number of electric cars per year. Records from countries like Japan, China, India, Singapore and many European countries have shown that the future of the automobile may belong to Electric cars. These countries embarking on these projects are the major buyers of crude oil, and they really know the limitations of Electric cars and that they are quickly trying to overcome by building charging stations within a specified kilometer distance. However, if such limitation will be overcome it will be a welcome development since such will help to save our planet from future destruction.
