WHAT IS A BACKHOE?

A backhoe is a heavy excavation equipment popularly referred to as digger, rear actor, or back actor, etc. its consists of a digging bucket on the end of a two-part articulated arm and usually mounted on the back of a tractor or front loader. If the equipment is mounted at the front loader, it will become the backhoe loader which the Ireland and UK refer to as JCB.

USES OF BACKHOE

A backhoe is a multipurpose civil engineering and agricultural farming machine whose uses are inevitable in any construction work and commercial farming.

BACKHOE DESCRIPTION

With the heavy and stable tractor acting as the carrier, the section of the arm closest to the vehicle is known as the boom and the term “Dipper or Dipper-stick” refers to the section which carries the bucket. The boom is usually attached to the vehicle through a pivot known as the king-post enabling the arm to move left and right up to 180 degrees to 200 degrees.

WHY IT IS CALLED BACKHOE

The term backhoe was derived from the action of the shovel due to the way it digs and draws earth backward rather than lifting with a forward motion. Though some may assume the name to come from the location of the shovel on the tractor which is not correct rather it is based on the shovel’s action. The difference in shoveling with the human hand and the equipment is that human shoveling lifts packed load up without shift the remaining loads while the equipment shovel will have to shift the remaining loads back to have space for lifting.

  4. Toxic chemicals must be kept away from the backhoe because of their potential to cause corrosion and rust rendering the machine parts damaged.
  5. Overloading the backhoe could create the chance for possible technical problems.
  6. The bucket and other major parts should be washed to ensure proper removal of mud and external objects after using the backhoe especially if it will be packed for a long time.

To dig, pull the left and right controls back at the same time to retract and raise the boom while keeping the bucket curled. It is not advisable to overfill the bucket. Having done that, push the left and right controls to the right to open the bucket, pull the stick toward the cap and dump the load. Raising the load up too high may can technical problem rather operate the machine at full throttle based on precision, speed, and control.

The operators are usually warned not to leave their seat whenever they are operating the backhoe or go underneath the machine. Rather following the operators’ manual from the manufacturer will always be the guideline. Ensure the operation had been stopped and boom lowered before carrying out any maintenance work.

After the whole operation lowers the boom, drive to the packing location and turn of the equipment and tractor.
